Health Promotion Practice publishes 2018 paper of the year in Spanish

Washington, D.C. – December 17, 2018 – The Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) announces the publication of its first peer-reviewed journal article in Spanish, “Aplicación de la teoría de aprendizaje en el entrenamiento acerca de seguridad y salud para trabajadores inmigrantes en las lecherías,” available open access in Health Promotion Practice (HPP).

The article, “Applying Learning Theory to Safety and Health Training for Hispanic Immigrant Dairy Workers,” was selected by the HPP Editorial Board as the 2018 Sarah Mazelis Paper of the Year.

The award-winning manuscript describes a novel intervention to address the significant problem of injuries among dairy workers, largely immigrant families who make up more than 50 percent of all dairy labor.

In addition to delivering the intervention in Spanish, the researchers needed to address low literacy levels, personal and cultural belief systems, vulnerability due to undocumented immigration status, and other social and health determinants.

“My colleagues and I are very grateful for SOPHE’s vision of publishing this first article in Spanish in its Health Promotion Practice journal,” notes lead author Dr. Patricia Júarez-Carillo, who also facilitated the translation. “Ultimately, this first step will have an exponential effect, especially for the immigrant populations we serve in the U.S., and for the escalation of health promotion in Spanish-speaking countries in the world.”

This article presents a strong, logical program, effective and appropriate evaluation, and, most importantly for HPP, clearly articulated implications for practice.

HPP’s Editor-in-Chief Dr. Kathleen Roe notes, “with the project originally conceived in Spanish, the program and its materials delivered in Spanish, and the manuscript drafted in Spanish, it seemed only right to publish the final, award-winning paper in Spanish as well.”

The HPP Editorial Board saw this as the perfect opportunity to broaden the reach and access of HPP’s work by offering an open access paper in one of the world’s most spoken languages.

The paper is available via open access in Spanish and English.
