Our collective vision of health equity requires racial equity. To achieve health equity, we need a diversity of voices, in the form of workforce, leadership, and scholarship. Public health is falling short— we are not diverse. The number of people of color – especially Black, Latinx, and Indigenous peoples – in our scientific journals, NIH grants, faculty, and students is low, and depleting.
In HE&B we are committed to health equity and we know that non-white scholars remain under-represented in our scientific publications. The voices of scholars of color are marginalized, if not quieted. We cannot afford such loss.
HE&B is calling for paper proposals (in the form of abstracts) for a special issue highlighting authors of color. We are seeking papers from authors of color (must be a first, lead, or senior author, self-identified as either Black, Latinx, Indigenous, Asian, Southeast Asian, Pacific Islander or non-white) on a variety of topics and methodologies within the scope of HE&B. Topics may be on, or about (but not limited to) health education processes, health behaviors, and health promotion as connected to:
- Whiteness and white supremacy
- Racism and racial equity
- Intersection of heterosexuality, able-bodies, and white supremacy
- Gender and sexuality
- Health inequity
- Diversity and inclusion
- Power, exclusion, and oppression
- Queerness, race, and ethnicity
- Immigration, nationalism, and colonialism
- Social class, socio-economic status, poverty
- Methodological and analytical approaches
Contributions to this special issue may be in the form of empirical analysis, theory, policy analysis, interventions, perspectives, auto-ethnography, essays, and literature reviews. We welcome authors from any part of the world.
Submissions of proposals must be in a form of an abstract: no more than 500 words, excluding tittle and authors, and double-spaced. Abstracts should include: title (limited to 16 words); authors and their affiliations; purpose, research questions and, or, argument; approach or methodology; and conclusion. Abstracts must clearly articulate the contribution(s) to this special issue.
Abstracts are due to

HE&B is a peer-reviewed, bimonthly journal that publishes authoritative empirical research and commentary on critical health issues of interest to a broad range of professionals whose work involves understanding factors associated with health behavior and evidence-based social and behavioral strategies to improve health status.
