WASHINGTON, D.C. – January 6, 2022 – The Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) reiterates its unequivocal condemnation of the attack on the U.S. Capitol one year ago today.

The ideals of our democracy shall never be replaced by repressive ideologies and demand continued action to fight racism and injustices that disproportionately impact many communities throughout the country. 😊

SOPHE is committed to dismantling all forms of injustice affecting the public’s health. 

In the past year, SOPHE’s Health Equity and Antiracism (HEAR) task force provided recommendations on measurable and specific actions to create an antiracist environment and strengthen our SOPHE internal capacity and operations. SOPHE has adopted a new strategic plan addressing health equity and antiracism in health education research, practice, pedagogy, and publications.

We have actively supported key federal legislation such as the Black Momnibus Act and Build Back Better Act to address long-standing underlying contributors to health inequities, such as health access and climate change. 

We have continued to fight against health misinformation and disinformation so that individuals have the capacity and freedom to make informed health choices. 

On this anniversary, SOPHE calls on each of its 4,000 national and chapter members to proactively center health equity and antiracism in their work.  

We must recommit to dismantling oppression wherever it exists.
