Washington, D.C. – February 13, 2020 – The Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE), will present more than 30 awards and scholarships to health education researchers, faculty, programs, practitioners and students during its annual conference in Atlanta, March 17-20, 2020. Of these awards, selected authors are recognized for their outstanding contributions to SOPHE’s three premier journals as papers of the year.
2019 Papers of the Year
Health Education & Behavior’s Lawrence W. Green Paper of the Year awardees for 2020 are Carmen Logie, PhD, Lisa Dias, MA, Jesse Jenkinson, MSc, Peter Newman, PhD, Rachel Mackenzie, MSc, MPH, Tampose Mothopeng, Veli Madau, BA, Amelia Ranotsi, PhD, Winnie Nhlengethwa, PhD, and Stefan Baral, MD, MPH for their article “Exploring the Potential of Participatory Theatre to Reduce Stigma and Promote Health Equity for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) People in Swaziland and Lesotho.” (Health Education & Behavior, February 2019, 46(1), 146-156.
“The paper brings together three major themes in public health, stigma, gender and sexual minorities, and participatory methodologies,” said Jesus Ramirez-Valles, Health Education & Behavior Editor in Chief. “It exemplifies one of the best practices in global health promotion.”
Health Promotion Practice presents the Sarah Mazelis 2020 Paper of the Year Award to Sara Heinert, MPH, Marina Del Rios, MD, MSc, Arjun Arya, MSc, Ramin Amirsoltani, MPH, Nasseef Quasim, BS, Lisa Gehm, MD, Natalia Suarez, MA, and Terry Vanden Hoek, MD for “The CHAMPIONS NETWork: Training Chicago High School Students as Health Advocates to Improve Health Equity.” (Health Promotion Practice, January 2019, 20(1), 57–66.

Elizabeth M. Felter, DrPH and Sara Baumann, MPH are recipients of the Pedagogy in Health Promotion: The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning 2020 Paper of the Year Award for their article, “Development of a Community-Engaged Classroom for Teaching Health Communications: Lessons Learned From Nine Semesters of Implementation.” (Pedagogy in Health Promotion: The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, December 2019, 5(4), 246-253.
“Dr. Elizabeth Felter and Ms. Sara Baumann present the kind of work that the readers of this journal find to be very useful. The topic, health communications, is of interest to many public health and health education specialists,” said Stephen Gambescia, former editor in chief of Pedagogy in Health Promotion: The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. “While students working with communities may not be new, these authors reflect on nine semesters of implementation which puts them in a position to outline a best practice and lessons learned in our teaching.”
